Oxidizing Gases

Oxidizing gases — typified by oxygen (O2) and including chlorine (Cl2), ozone (O3), and nitrous oxide (N2O) — are strong oxidizers or combustion-supporting agents. When compressed in contact with oil, combustible materials, or certain metals, they can trigger violent oxidation reactions leading to fire or explosion. This makes them one of the highest-risk gas categories in industrial handling. The core of any compressor solution must be built on absolute safety — covering equipment selection, materials, sealing, monitoring, and operation from start to finish.

Core Safety Principles & General Design Requirements

Before handling any oxidizing gas in a compressor system, the following iron-clad rules must be followed — principles deeply embedded in Huayan's product design and engineering practice:

1.Absolute Oil-Free & Ultra-High Cleanliness: The entire compressor system (including compressor internals, all piping, valves, and instrumentation) must be strictly free of any oil or grease contamination. According to GB 50030-2013 Code for Design of Oxygen Station, oxygen compressors must adopt oil-free lubrication design. All components must undergo thorough degreasing cleaning before assembly and be purged with oil-free dry air or nitrogen.

2.Material Compatibility: All materials in contact with the gas must be oxidation-resistant and oil-free. Easily oxidized organic or inorganic materials are strictly prohibited. Per API 618 and GB/T 20322-2006, copper and copper alloys must not be used in compressor parts contacting gases like oxygen that can form explosive compounds (certain bearing alloys are excluded). For acetylene service, mercury, silver, and their alloys are also prohibited.

3.Prevent Gas Mixing: Oxygen must never be mixed with flammable gases such as hydrogen. Before introducing the gas, the compressor system must be thoroughly purged with nitrogen to remove air and prevent formation of explosive mixtures.

4.Comprehensive Safety Monitoring & Interlocking: Full monitoring of temperature, pressure, and cooling medium flow is mandatory across the compressor system, with over-limit alarms and automatic shutdown interlocks. Equipment and piping must be reliably grounded to prevent static buildup (grounding resistance ≤ 10 Ω).
